Understanding and Managing Pet Scooting

What is scooting?
Have you've ever caught your pet dragging its behind across the floor? This peculiar and often comical behavior is commonly referred to as scooting. While it might appear hilarious at first, it's usually a signal that your pet is experiencing discomfort in their bottom region. The behavior can be an attempt to relieve itching, irritation, or pain in the area.

Common causes of scooting
Many causes can lead to your pet scooting, the most frequent cause is anal gland problems. These small sacs, located on either side of the anus, can become impacted or infected, leading to discomfort and the urge to scoot.

Other common triggers to this behavior can be:
  • Presence of dried fecal matter which can create itchiness and irritation. In this case simply inspect the area under the tail and clean thoroughly to remove any residue.
  • Digestive issues, such as diarrhea or constipation.
  • Allergies: Food or environmental allergies can trigger itching and discomfort.
  • Infections or Parasites present in the anal area can trigger scooting as your pet tries to relieve the irritation.
What to do if your pet is scooting
If you notice your pet scooting persistently or if they show signs of pain or discomfort, it's crucial to consult your veterinarian. They can diagnose the underlying issue and recommend appropriate treatment.
During your visit to the veterinarian address the possibility of allergies. If this is the cause of your pet’s discomfort your vet may recommend dietary changes, allergen avoidance, or medications to relieve itching. In this case, a diet centered around a single animal protein can help identify the allergen triggering inflammation.

Moreover, if the issue is due to anal glands, a diet richer in fiber can help with the natural emptying of the glands thus resulting in less discomfort.
To help increase your pet’s fiber intake, our line of functional foods, such as N&D Quinoa Weight Management or Neutered formulas, can aid in addressing their condition, thanks to their specific recipes with high soluble fiber content.
