Improvements in Digestibility, Palatability, Biodiversity, and Bioavailability Driven by Farmina’s Scientific Research

Farmina continuously reviews its recipes based on scientific research led by our internal Farmina Vet Research Team in collaboration with leading universities worldwide such as Cornell University. Using gold standard scientific research methods conducted through cruelty free practices, these refinements support digestibility, nutrient availability, and overall enjoyment for pets while maintaining Farmina’s quality and sourcing standards.

Human Grade Pork Fat -  Sourced from Italy, this ingredient is a natural source of essential fatty acids that support healthy skin and coat, enhance palatability, and help naturally preserve the freshness of the recipe.

Human Grade Dehydrated Pork -  Sourced from Italy, this highly digestible, nutrient dense protein offers a balanced amino acid profile that supports lean muscle maintenance. As a less commonly used protein source, it is often selected as a novel option for pets seeking alternatives to more common allergens.

Hydrolyzed Fish/Hydrolyzed Pork  - We introduced hydrolyzed fish and/or hydrolyzed pork in more recipies, which are proteins broken down through a gentle enzymatic process. This helps support digestibility and may be beneficial for pets with sensitivities, while still providing high-quality protein to support overall health.

Whole Barley - Included in our grain-inclusive diets only. It's a nutrient rich grain chosen to support digestion and low glycemic. It provides a balanced blend of soluble and insoluble fiber that helps promote smooth digestion and healthy stool quality.

Rice - Included in N&D Digestion Canine and N&D Tropical Selection only,  rice is a highly digestible carbohydrate source. Rice is commonly used to support gentle digestion and provides readily available energy while maintaining nutritional balance.

Natural Flavors -  We use natural flavors derived from the protein source of each specific diet. These flavors are free from artificial preservatives and help enhance aroma and acceptance without the use of synthetic additives, supporting a positive eating experience while remaining consistent with Farmina’s ingredient standards.

As always, every ingredient is carefully tested before, during, and after production to ensure purity, quality, and consistency — so pet parents can feel confident in the food they’re choosing. For complete details, please visit each product page for the updated ingredient list:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Farmina update its recipes from time to time?
Farmina regularly reviews and updates its recipes to ensure they continue to support optimal digestibility, nutrient availability, and enjoyment for pets. Nutrition is a science in constant evolution, and recipes developed decades ago are periodically updated as they benefit from today’s research and understanding. These updates reflect our commitment to supporting your pet’s long-term wellbeing while staying true to the quality and standards that define Farmina.

What guides Farmina’s ingredient and formulation decisions?
Farmina’s recipes are guided by nutritional science, ingredient functionality, and pet health outcomes. Ingredients continue to be sourced from our trusted European and New Zealand partners, and updated recipes are built using ingredients already utilized across Farmina diets. These updates reflect a commitment to improved nutrition without shortcuts, ensuring every ingredient serves a clear purpose in supporting digestibility, palatability, and long-term wellbeing.

Are Farmina’s recipes developed and updated in the US and Europe?
Yes. Farmina recipes are developed through collaboration between teams in the United States and Europe and are implemented consistently across Farmina kitchens in both regions. These updates reflect shared scientific standards and nutritional goals, ensuring pets receive the same level of quality, care, and innovation regardless of where the food is made.

What ingredient standards does Farmina follow?
Farmina maintains strict ingredient standards across every recipe. All ingredients used in our facilities are evaluated and tested prior to use in our onsite microbiological and analytical laboratories to ensure they meet our quality and safety standards. Meat and fish ingredients are sourced from human grade supply chains, and all ingredients are selected for their nutritional role rather than marketing trends. Our recipes continue to use GMO free, responsibly sourced ingredients designed to support long term pet health.

How does Farmina choose ingredients for each recipe?
Farmina selects ingredients based on their nutritional role and how they support the overall balance of each recipe. Ingredients such as GMO-free barley or rice, or antibiotic and hormone free pork, are used intentionally in select diets to support digestibility, energy balance, and amino acid diversity. These ingredients are not new to Farmina and have long been part of our kitchens, applied thoughtfully where they make the most nutritional sense.

Did any of the guaranteed analysis change with this most recent recipe update?
No. The guaranteed analysis remains the same across all diets, with no exceptions.

What can pet parents expect from these recipe updates?
Farmina’s recipe updates are designed to maintain the same nutritional balance while supporting improved digestibility, palatability, and nutrient bioavailability.

How does Farmina support pets with sensitivities?
By selecting GMO free, high quality, human grade ingredients sourced from trusted European and New Zealand partners, Farmina creates recipes that are well tolerated by a wide range of pets. Farmina offers a broad variety of limited ingredient and single protein diets, as well as both grain inclusive and grain free options, including novel proteins such as venison and wild caught herring. This range allows pet parents to choose the recipe best suited to their pet’s individual needs.

Has packaging been updated with the recent recipe updates?
Yes. As updated recipes enter the market, packaging may vary. The recipe inside the bag will always match the ingredient list printed on the packaging.

Is Farmina privately owned?
Yes. Farmina is a family owned and operated, third generation pet nutrition company founded in 1965 in Naples, Italy. The company remains guided by the Russo family, whose mission has always been to advance pet nutrition through science and care.
