WHY ARE CATS AND DOGS CONSIDERED CARNIVORES?

Although cats and dogs have evolved from their wild ancestors into our beloved pets, much of their anatomy has remained the same. African wild cats and wolves, ancestors to our household cat and dogs respectively, relied on a meat based diet to satisfy their nutritional needs. From a physiological and anatomic point of view, we can see that cats and dogs are still carnivores because:

1. THEY DON'T PRODUCE SALIVARY AMYLASE
Salivary amylase is an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of carbohydrates. Not having this enzyme requires the pancreas to overwork because it is now in charge of the total digestion of carbohydrates.

2. SHORT AND SIMPLE INTESTINES
Thanks to the highly acidic pH inside of their stomachs, fats and proteins are easily and quickly digested in their short intestinal tract.

3. SHARP TEETH AND WIDE MOUTH OPENING
Their large mouth opening makes them capable of swallowing big chunks of food while their short and sharp teeth are perfect for ripping flesh.

4. GLUCONEOGENESIS
Cats don't use carbohydrates as their primary energy source, but instead, use proteins and fats.

5. INSULINEMIC RESPONSE
Food rich in carbohydrates cause a higher insulin response and leads to the storage of glucose excess in the form of body fat. This process may lead to diabetes and obesity.

Natural & Delicious is a nutritional system scientifically developed for the carnivorous nature of cats and dogs, available in two lines: Grain Free completely without cereals, and Low Ancestral Grain with only a few ancestral grains (spelt and oats).
